Our theme for our Advent services this year is Jesus is our prophet, priest, and king. These three offices in the Old Testament foreshadowed the person and work of Christ as our Messiah.Over the next three weeks, we will be looking more closely at each of these offices and how Christ fulfilled them all.Tonight we will at the office of prophet.
II.Questions Concerning Jesus as our prophet:
A.What was the purpose of the office of a prophet in the Old Testament?
·The prophet was to speak the Words of the Lord through which God revealed Himself to His people.
·Passages: 1.Deuteronomy 18:15-19 (Moses spoke the Words of God) 2.Micah 1:1, 3:5 (‘Thus says the Lord…’) (see other prophets)
B.Why do we need a prophet?
·Without a prophet we would not know the Lord, for God revealed Himself through the Old Testament prophets and ultimately in Christ.
·Passage: Hebrews 1:1-4
C. Why do we believe that Jesus is our Prophet?
·Like the Old Testament prophets, Christ taught us the Word.
·Yet, unlike all other prophets, Christ actually was/is the Word.He is the Word of God incarnate for the Word became flesh. Not only did He reveal God through His teaching, He actually revealed God through His person and work.He has made the Father known to us.Thus, He is the true prophet, the One that Moses spoke of long ago.
·Passages:
1.John 1:1-18
2.Acts 3:11-26
III.Conclusion:
It is through Christ that we know God and it is through Christ that we will continue to know God.It is through the work of Christ that we have hope in being with God forever as His people. We know in part now, but when Christ returns, we shall know in full (1 Corinthians 13:8-12).Amen.
