Matt 24-25: Preparing for the King's Return Print E-mail

There is no lack of interest in the Second Coming of Christ and the end of the world.  Whether it be books (the Left Behind series), television programs (there was a recent series on end times events entitled Revelations), or movies, it seems that people in general are very interested in the Last Days.  They want to know what is going to happen and, even more, when it is going to happen.  And this is no new occurrence.  Ever since Christ came the first time, and even before, there has been an interest in how the history of the world will come to a close.

Matt 21-23: The Response of the King to Opposition Print E-mail

How should we respond to opposition against the Kingdom of God?  We see in the New Testament that there is a war going on.  It is a war between the domain of darkness and the Kingdom of the Light.  It is real.  The enemy is real.  He is spending all his energies to oppose the Kingdom of Christ.  He is not flesh and bone, but he is real.  As Paul tells us, we wrestle against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places (Ephesians 5:12).  Thus, I return to my original question: how are we to respond to such opposition from the enemy?

Matt 19-20: Contrasts Between the Kingdom and the World Print E-mail

In preparation for our Sunday night menís Bible study that begins tonight, I listened to the author of our book, John Piper, preach a sermon dealing with his book Donít Waste Your Life.  In the sermon, Piper contrasted two stories.  The first was a story about two retired women, both approaching the age of eighty, who had given their lives to missions and were serving in a foreign country, when the car they were driving skidded off a mountain road and plunged them to their death.  The second story was about a couple who had retired early, moved to Florida, and were spending their last years on the earth boating, playing softball, and collecting sea shells.

Matt 16-18: Our Relationship to the King and His Followers Print E-mail

When I was in college I was obsessed with the idea of getting married.  Lee, my former pastor and I, would sit around all the time talking about how we wanted to find the perfect girl and make her our wife.  When Lee was married a week after our graduation, needless to say, I was left wanting marriage even more.  I had received teaching on marriage.  I had seen good examples of great marriages.  I had friends who were getting married left and right.  All this left me anxious about marriage and longing for such a relationship.

Matt 14-15: Examples of Life in the Kingdom Print E-mail

What does life in the Kingdom look like?  If we are living in the already, not yet reign of God, then what are we to expect?  In the parables of the Kingdom that we looked at last week, we learned, specifically from the parable of the weeds and the net, that for a time in the Kingdom evil will exist along side the children of the King.  We have also seen that Jesus brought healing and power to work miracles to his ministry on earth.  Likewise, the call to respond to the King with faith in all that he has done has been another theme throughout the book of Matthew.  It is these lessons that we see exemplified in Matthew 14-15.

Matt 13: Parables of the Kingdom Print E-mail

I would venture to guess that many of you could tell me some of the parables of Jesus if I asked.  If fact, for many of us, they are some of our favorite parts of Jesusí teaching and all of the New Testament.  I think of the Prodigal Son or the lost sheep and how often I have reflected on these parables of Jesus.  Indeed, we are people who seemingly enjoy the parables of our Lord.
