Gen 20-23: The Lord Will Provide Print E-mail
When I was in college I came to know a missionary by the name of Paul Washer.  Paul is a missionary to Peru and is involved in training and supporting Peruvian pastors to minister in Peru.  On a couple of occasions he came and spoke to students at Union and I was able to attend.  Paul is one of those men that every time I am around him the Lord seems to bring conviction in my life.  He is extremely passionate about the Word of God and the work of missions in the world and he is not afraid to say things that are offensive and hard for us ‘comfortable American Christians’ to hear.  For that, I have much respect for his life and his ministry.

Gen 16-19: The Consequences of Sin and the Triumph of Grace Print E-mail

How do you deal with the situation of an unwed couple becoming pregnant?  Many of us, at some point in our lives, have wrestled with that question, whether it be friends, family, or just people that we know.  Having faced it in my own family, I must admit that it is difficult.  The shame and disgrace that comes from ‘being caught’ in premarital sex is often felt by many parties, either the couple themselves or their parents.  Then you must deal with the fact that a baby is on the way and life will never be the same.  Should the couple marry?  Should they pursue education?  Who will raise the baby?  What will be the future of the mother and father of the child?  What role will the grandparents play?  All of these questions are part of the difficulty in this situation.

Gen 12-15: A Pattern for God's Relationship with Man Print E-mail

If you would, take your bulletins out once again.  I want to point out a couple of things as we begin this morning.  If you look on the front you notice the lovely picture of the Bible and the candles with the passage from John 1.  You also see at the bottom the Church’s name and the Church staff.  If you open the bulletin you see our order of service for this morning.  It is similar to most mornings with the appropriate changes of songs, sermon title, and scripture.  Then if you look on the next page you see our announcements (with the added text of Genesis 12:2-3).  On the outer flap you find our prayer requests and information about our meeting times.  On the very back you find the place for sermon notes (which you should be filling in vigorously in the next few moments).  All this makes up our bulletin.  And for the most part, from week to week, it is very similar.  Now the particular information changes, but the pattern remains the same.  We have a cover, an order of service, a page for announcements, and a page for sermon notes.  Although the details will vary from week to week, the overall pattern remains the same.

Gen 10-11: The Plans of Man and the Plan of God Print E-mail

Derek Webb writes in one of my favorite songs, “I know the plans that You have for me, and You can’t plan the ends and not plan the means.” 1  In the song, Webb is dealing with his personal struggle of wanting a wife, a struggle I knew well before my relationship with Glenna.  This line is taken from the end of the song where he is coming to the conclusion that he should trust in God.  Why?  Because God has a plan, which He has revealed in Scripture.  And not only does He have a plan, but Scripture also teaches us that God is intimately involved in carrying out that very plan.  Thus, as Webb says, God has planned the end and the means by which the end will be accomplished.  The means refer to everything that happens, which God uses to bring about His planned purposes.

Gen 6:9-9:29: God's Response to Evil: Judgment and Salvation Print E-mail

How does God respond to the wickedness of men?  As believers, this is an important question to answer.  Rebellion and evil run rampant in our world today.  Man continues to behave wickedly before God.  So, then, we must answer the question, How will God respond to such evil?

Gen 4:1-6:8: The Spread of Sin and the Grace of God Print E-mail

We learn from the book of Genesis that sin spreads rapidly.  In fact, after the judgment following the Fall and Adam and Eve being removed from the garden of Eden, sin immediately begins to impact the first family.  We talked last week about the devastation of the Fall and how all of humanity was plunged into sin because of Adam and Eve’s decision, in our passage this week we see the reality of such teaching.  It does not take us long to realize that sin is wreaking havoc in humanity and that rebellion against God is running rampant.
