I try to regularly read good biographies of faithful pastors who have gone before me. In the past few years I have read about George Whitefield and Martin Lloyd Jones and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, all men who were faithful ministers of the Word in different ways. As with other biographies I have read, they have each encouraged my faith. Perhaps you have been encouraged by the faith of others as well. Why does this often happen? John Piper writes in his book on John Newton, Charles Simeon, and William Wilberforce, which he entitled The Roots of Endurance: ďGod-centered, Christ-exalting, Bible-saturated saints who have endured to the end are one of the roots of our own endurance.Ē1 In other words, God uses the enduring faith of those who have gone before us to encourage us in our own faith.

OUR CREATOR AND REDEEMER AND THE FIGHT FOR LIFE

Today we celebrate the sanctity of all human life. We see every child as a gift from God. We value every life because it is made in the image of God. The celebration of human life means that as followers of Christ and believers in Godís Word that we must fight against the culture of death in which we currently life. We fight against abortion on all its fronts: political, personal, financial, etc. We fight against the belief that it is alright to kill those with diseases or the terminally ill. We fight against slave trafficking and racism and other forms of prejudice, which exist because some people view other people as less than human and therefore available for exploitation. We fight against all these evils and more because we value human life. Not only that, but because we see every human as made in the image of God, we fight for unborn babies. We fight for those facing crisis pregnancies. We fight for pregnancy resource centers who are on the frontlines of this fight for life. We fight for those who have faced persecution and hardship for their race. We fight to protect any who cannot protect themselves. It is not so much a fight for rights (although that is part of the battle) as it is a fight for life, a fight for helping people see the value of every human being since they are made in Godís image. We celebrate the sanctity of human life today to remind us and encourage us in this fight.

When I first started learning how to drive, my dad gave me a very important warning. Actually, he gave me several important warnings about driving in general, but the one I am talking about is one he gave me about taking care of my car. He told me, ĎIf you ever see the temperature gauge running hot, do not keep driving the car.í Seemed simple enough and I had no real trouble listening to what he was saying. Well, that is until the day came that the warning got in the way of my plans. I was on my way to my friends house to do some really important things like hang out and maybe play some basketball. Yet, I didnít get far and my temperature gauge was running seriously hot. So what did I do? Remember my fatherís warning and pull over? No way, I had things to do. Besides, whatís the big deal? How much damage could I really do? If you know anything about cars, then you know the answer to that question. I kept driving and before long the car broke down. We took it in and was told that I cracked the head in the engine. My dad was not so happy. He asked me if I remembered the warning and I told them I did. Then he told me that I would have to pay for the damage. It literally pays sometimes to heed wise warnings.

Jesus is better than anything or any person or any religion. He is the greatest treasure of all in this life and in the age to come. The author of Hebrews has written this letter or sermon to teach this truth to His readers. As we have said repeatedly, many of them were apparently considering going back to Judaism. But the writer of Hebrews shows them why that would be a mistake. Over and over again he demonstrates that Jesus is better. He is better than angels, better than Joshua and Moses. He is a better priest and a better sacrifice and the covenant He brings is better than the old. In all these ways and more, Jesus is better.
